The American Special Telecaster was Fender's stripped-back U.S. value line, built for players who wanted American production without the price of the higher-trim models. Texas Special pickups, jumbo frets and Greasebucket-style wiring gave it a more aggressive, less neutral identity than the American Standard Tele and made it attractive to players who wanted some factory attitude. On the used market, originality counts most around pickups and wiring, while finish and ordinary wear count less than whether the guitar still reflects the stock American Special recipe. It is a straightforward player Tele and usually a sensible value in the used U.S. market.
